Suggested Activities for Your Church
on World AIDS Day


  • Ask your Pastor to speak out against AIDS during morning worship on World AIDS Day December 1, 2002.
  • Include AIDS education into Sunday worship service.
  • Include AIDS facts in your Sunday bulletin.
  • Join the Black Church HIV/AIDS Network.
  • Host a candlelight prayer vigil.
  • Encourage folks to get tested for HIV.
  • Host an AIDS education seminar in your church.
  • Volunteer for a local AIDS service organization.
  • Mobilize a community HIV awareness rally and march.
  • Host a forum on AIDS and invite community leaders.
  • Host a community HIV/AIDS memorial service.
  • Develop partnerships with a local AIDS service organization.
  • Contact your local health department to participate in the next HIV/AIDS Community Planning Meeting.


Planning Checklist World AIDS Day Event

Assemble a planning committee. You may select members from existing groups in your church, e.g., members from the AIDS Ministry, Health Ministry or Prison Ministry

Create a preliminary plan, including program activities, guests, space/equipment needs and expenses

Designate members of your planning committee to complete specific tasks. Be sure to set realistic deadlines for tasks

Identify guests, speakers, workshop leaders, choirs and musicians

Assemble a list of local media (especially Black newspapers, radio and TV) and send them a press release on your church's letterhead

Develop a flyer about your church's program for mailing to people and organizations in the community who will want to know, including:

  • Other Churches
  • Elected Officials
  • Community-based Organizations
  • AIDS Organizations
  • Corporate Community Relations Executive
