The Challenges Ahead
A
strong foundation was built as a result of this meeting and further talks with
religious leaders. Zimbabweans are thirsty for knowledge about HIV/AIDS and extremely
eager to begin the work of educating their communities, with the help of The Balm
In Gilead. The church is anxious to use their voice to turn back the tide of devastation
from this disease and to partner with their African American brothers and sisters.
In final discussions with religious leaders, Reverend Mugarura said, "It
sounds like you are ready to go to the frontline to fight AIDS!" Everyone
wanted to do something. Even our drivers participated in training sessions and
helped distribute pamphlets about HIV/AIDS in their churches and their communities.
Wherever we went - even to make copies for our meetings - people asked for more
information and for materials to share with their friends and family.
As the team prepared to leave Zimbabwe for Kenya, they said goodbye to team
members Dr. Bailey, Dr. Joyce Moon-Howard, and Fred Eno. Looking ahead to the
work in Nairobi, Kenya with the Anglican Church, the Balm team had the experience
and confidence of the successful work completed in four African countries.
