The Balm In Gilead operates the nation's only HIV/AIDS technical assistance
center designed specifically to serve churches as well as public agencies and
community-based organizations that wish to work with Black churches on AIDS issues.
The purposes of the National Faith-Based HIV/AIDS
Training & Technical Assistance Center are:
1. To enhance the ability of Black Churches to respond to HIV/AIDS, by providing
capacity building and technical assistance services, including:

Assistance on starting an HIV/AIDS ministry
-
Social marketing
-
Infrastructure development
-
Fiscal management
-
How to mobilize and engage community leaders
2. To increase the cultural competence of public health professionals as well
as medical and other direct service providers to work appropriately and effectively
with the Black faith community.
The Center maintains five panels of experts who ensure that the Center's services
are grounded in science, informed by the latest theories and are appropriate for
use by target audiences. The Balm In Gilead has a team of experts affiliated with
The Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University who evaluate
the Center's activities.
The Technical Assistance Center provides the following
services:
1. Develops resource materials and education protocols for use by Black churches
and public health professionals.
2. Provides ongoing technical assistance to support HIV education and prevention
activities within Black churches and to assist collaborations between Black faith
organizations and state and local departments of health, medical and social service
