The Faith-Based HIV/AIDS National Technical Assistance Center

The Balm In Gilead operates the nation's only HIV/AIDS technical assistance center designed specifically to serve churches as well as public agencies and community-based organizations that wish to work with Black churches on AIDS issues.

The purposes of the National Faith-Based HIV/AIDS Training & Technical Assistance Center are:

    1. To enhance the ability of Black Churches to respond to HIV/AIDS, by providing capacity building and technical assistance services, including:

    • Assistance on starting an HIV/AIDS ministry

    • Social marketing

    • Infrastructure development

    • Fiscal management

    • How to mobilize and engage community leaders

    2. To increase the cultural competence of public health professionals as well as medical and other direct service providers to work appropriately and effectively with the Black faith community.

The Center maintains five panels of experts who ensure that the Center's services are grounded in science, informed by the latest theories and are appropriate for use by target audiences. The Balm In Gilead has a team of experts affiliated with The Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University who evaluate the Center's activities.

The Technical Assistance Center provides the following services:

    1. Develops resource materials and education protocols for use by Black churches and public health professionals.

    2. Provides ongoing technical assistance to support HIV education and prevention activities within Black churches and to assist collaborations between Black faith organizations and state and local departments of health, medical and social service providers and community based organizations. To obtain technical assistance, you may send an email to info@balmingilead.org or call the Center at 1-888-225-6243.
