OVERVIEW
As more Black churches heed the call to become community centers for HIV/AIDS
education, treatment and compassion, they need support and assistance from organizations
that understand and respect their uniqueness and strengths. The Balm In Gilead's
National Certification and Capacity Building Conference for Engaging Black Churches
in HIV/AIDS Education and Service is designed to build the capacity of community-based
organizations, civic organizations and health departments to work effectively
with Black churches in addressing HIV/AIDS awareness, and to develop a strong
network of organizations throughout the United States that support the implementation
of HIV/AIDS programs within Black churches.
Over the years, The Balm In Gilead has expanded and strengthened its capacity
to mobilize Black churches to become community centers for AIDS education by creating
strong partnerships with community-based organizations. To date, over 100 various
service organizations in urban and rural communities have partnered with The Balm
In Gilead in supporting the development of African American church-based HIV/AIDS
programs at the local level.
Organizational Partners of The Balm In Gilead must make a commitment to:
- Implement The Balm In Gilead's national programs at the local level using
the program models presented at the conference.
- Work with Black churches throughout the entire year to develop and
support each congregation's response to the AIDS crisis within their respective
church structures and activities.
- Disseminate educational materials provided by The Balm In Gilead throughout
the year to local churches.
- Support national, regional and local conferences and programs of The Balm
In Gilead by sponsoring and supporting Black church leaders and members to attend
and participate in such programs.
- Provide reports and evaluations to The Balm In Gilead regarding mobilization
efforts and the involvement of Black churches in AIDS education and services at
designated periods throughout the year.
- Provide and support leadership on public policies that address the crisis
of HIV/AIDS in African American communities at city, state and national levels.
