The Balm In Tanzania – A History
The Balm In Gilead received the complete endorsement and support of its partnership with both the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (Catholic) and Christian Council of Tanzania (Protestant) in 2002. Although dedicated to their partnerships, both groups indicated the need to work independently within the culture of their faith communities. The Balm In Gilead responded by working to build the infrastructure capacity of both partners. Although both CCT and TEC were engaged in some HIV/AIDS work, at the time the partnerships were established there was limited HIV/AIDS programming due to lack of resources, appropriate skill sets, materials and services.
During the official launch of The Balm In Gilead’s partnership with CCT, in May 2002, Prime Minister Frederick Tirway Sumaye endorsed and thanked The Balm In Gilead for its commitment to working with faith communities in Tanzania. The process of infrastructure development has forged new linkages between TEC, CCT and BAKWATA. They have joint meetings, share an evaluator and have developed joint strategic plans. Representatives from both TEC and CCT, as well as from The National Muslim Council of Tanzania (BAKWATA), successfully worked together during The Balm’s Africa HIV/AIDS Faith Initiative Six-Week Training Institute in New York City in 2003. In January 2004, during a Four-Week Training Institute which took place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, The Balm In Gilead formalized its partnership with BAKWATA thus completing its investment in each of Tanzania’s three major faith communities.
In conjunction with its faith partners and MAP International, The Balm In Gilead is also working to build the capacity of theological institutions from different denominations. The aim is to provide a comprehensive HIV/AIDS education curriculum to equip graduating clergy in addressing the challenges of the HIV/AIDS pandemic within their congregations and communities.
