Preliminary Needs Assessment Report on the Involvement and Participation of Religious Leaders in HIV Prevention, Education and Care

The Balm in Africa - A Preliminary Needs Assessment Report on the Involvement and Participation of Religious Leaders in HIV Prevention, Education and Care in Cote d'Ivoire

The Balm In Gilead, Inc.™ is pleased to present the results of a preliminary needs assessment on the involvement and participation of religious leaders in HIV prevention, education and care in Cote d' Ivoire.
The preliminary needs assessment was conducted in Abidjan, between June 2002 and March 2003. One hundred and forty six religious organizations, representing three denominations, Methodists, Catholics, and Pentecostals, participated in the exercise. This Report is designed to gather information on the awareness level of religious leaders regarding the AIDS crisis in Cote d'Ivoire. More specifically, this assessment report could serve as a tool to help others determine the current level of involvement and the barriers preventing the participation of religious leaders in HIV prevention, education and care in other countries.

This Preliminary Needs Assessment Report is in partnership with Coalition of Religions Against HIV/AIDS in Cote d'Ivoire and is endorsed by the HIV/AIDS planning committees from the Catholic, Methodist and Pentecostal Churches.

The goal of this preliminary needs assessment is to be viewed as an opportunity to begin the important task of capacity development in regard to survey and evaluation methods, as well as to serve as a vehicle for involving leaders and laity in the early stages of strategic planning for their in-county faith initiative.
