The Balm In Côte d'lvoire–
A History
Before the beginning of the war in Côte d’Ivoire, The Balm In Gilead had begun to establish a central national HIV/AIDS office that would coordinate HIV/AIDS education and services for the three major church denominations in the country: the Catholic, Methodist and Pentecostal Churches. During April 2002, The Balm In Gilead placed Côte d’Ivoire, then reported to have the highest rate of HIV infection in West Africa, the first country they visited during their 6-week African planning tour. During this visit The Balm In Gilead gained the combined respect and partnership endorsements of many government and religious officials, including Madame Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, Côte d’Ivoire’s First Lady.
In spite of the war, the commitment of the faith community to address HIV/AIDS was sustaine. In 2003, The Balm In Gilead supported the establishment of the Coalition of Religions Against AIDS in Côte d’Ivoire (CORAS – CI). Dr. Youdjé Ateby was appointed as the Coalition’s director.
The Balm In Côte d’Ivoire Present Activities
& Future Plans
Recently a number of major accomplishments were achieved in the process of establishing a national, faith-based HIV/AIDS program in Côte d’Ivoire. The forum of representatives from each of the three partners was recently formed and a constitution to guide the forum was drafted and adopted. The new organization, CORAS CI, having recently finalized an annual work plan, is working with The Balm In Gilead to implement its work fighting HIV/AIDS despite the difficult political situation..
