Celebrating
19 Years!
The Balm In Gilead and the African American Faith Community are preparing for the 19th Annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS.
On March 2-8, 2008, we are turning our hearts and minds to the epidemic
in the African American community. We are asking every pastor throughout
Black America’s neighborhoods to join in this interdenominational bond,
along with our national leaders, to speak out against complacency, denial
and do-nothing attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS.
We have been living in the midst
of a life-threatening crisis for the past 25 years. Our children, ages
13-19, are now over 60% of those teens living with HIV in the United States
and
in some Black communities, our mothers and fathers - the elderly - have
HIV infection rates higher than those of our children. Our gay brothers,
fathers,
uncles have been screaming for attention to the AIDS epidemic for more
than a quarter of a century, while our mothers, sisters and aunts have been
silently
dying from shame and AIDS.

At
the Black Church HIV/AIDS Training Institute, we invite all church ministries
to re-dedicate themselves to the critical role of “leader” as
we
seek God’s guidance in living through this sad hour of history, when over
25 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world today are of African ancestry. More >>> |

In an unprecedented moment in Black history, the national presidents of the women’s missionary society of The African Methodist Episcopal Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and Christian Methodist Episcopal Church this week announced a partnership with The Balm In Gilead.
This partnership is also designed to build a sustainable health education
and service delivery system within African American faith communities that
will reach the masses. “This partnership serves as a historical marker
in the Black community,” said Pernessa Seele, Founder/CEO, The Balm In
Gilead. “It is the first time in history that three denominations have
banded together with a national technical assistance organization to address
health disparities on a comprehensive scale.”
