NY) -February 6, 2004
Legendary song stylist Miss Nancy Wilson presents "An
Evening At The Waldorf With Nancy Wilson," on Friday, March 5, 2004. The
event is a benefit performance for The Balm In Gilead, Inc., a not-for-profit,
non-governmental organization with an international mission to stop the spread
of HIV/AIDS throughout the African Diaspora. This benefit gala, hosted by actress
Lynn Whitfield, was originally scheduled for December 6, 2003, but was postponed
due to the area's massive winter snowstorm.
This benefit performance kicks off the 15th Annual Black Church Week of Prayer
for the Healing of AIDS, March 7-13, 2004, the largest HIV/AIDS awareness campaign
targeting the African American faith community. This is a milestone year for an
organization whose work spans decades of mobilizing churches across the Black
Diaspora to become community centers for HIV/AIDS education, prevention and compassionate
care.
"This evening not only celebrates one of the world's greatest artists, but
increases awareness and raises funds to help stop the HIV/AIDS pandemic that is
taking the life out of our communities around the world," says Pernessa Seele,
Founder and CEO of The Balm In Gilead, Inc.
Since its inception in 1989, The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of
AIDS has encourages Black Churches to recognize the Black Church Week of Prayer
by hosting AIDS workshops, distributing information or devoting a sermon or song
to those affected and infected by the virus.
Now celebrating it's landmark 15th year of service, The Balm In Gilead, Inc,
works to build the capacity of faith communities to provide HIV/AIDS education
and support networks for all people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS throughout
the Black Diaspora. The organization currently work with faith leaders in five
African countries (Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Kenya)
addressing the devastation of HIV/AIDS. The Balm In Gilead's pioneering achievements
have enabled thousands of churches to become leaders in preventing HIV by providing
comprehensive educational programs and offering compassionate support to encourage
those infected to seek and maintain treatment.
