Health care professionals will provide free, confidential AIDS testing
during the public conference from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Mt.
Olive Cathedral CME Church, 538 Linden, and at a youth rally from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew AME Church Community Life
Center, 1472 Mississippi Blvd. The activities are part of the [Black
Church Week of Prayer for the healing of] AIDS. The weeklong observance
is sponsored by the Balm in Gilead, a faith-based national AIDS
awareness group. The prayer week is an effort to "turn black
churches into centers of support" for people with the virus.
"We're trying to target as many African-American churches
in this community to get on board with praying and talking about
HIV and AIDS," said local event coordinator Carole Y. Dickens.
According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
black Americans make up 13 percent of the population, but account
for 50 percent of reported AIDS cases and half of all new HIV infections.
