HURTSBORO, Ala. - St. John AME Church, 2 Matthew Court, kicks off
the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS with a special
service at 11 a.m. EST Sunday.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, AIDS
is the leading cause of death for black Americans age 25-44 -- before
heart disease, cancer and homicide -- and one of every 50 black
men and one of every 160 black women has HIV.
The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS is an annual
effort to stop the transmission of the disease and to provide compassion
for victims.
The annual observance in black churches is sponsored nationally
by The Balm in Gilead, a New-York based ministry assisting churches
in AIDS awareness.
"Our goal is to provide prayer, leadership, compassion and
information to help the families in our congregation and community
who are facing HIV/AIDS," the Rev. Monroe Smith, pastor of
the church, said in a statement.
