The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS, which
is in its 13th year nationally, is part of the mission of The Balm
of Gilead, a national organization that works with black churches
to educate the community about HIV/AIDS. The Knox County Health
Department has been a certified service partner in The Balm in Gilead,
which is supported by more than 17 major church denominations, caucuses,
coalitions and independent churches, since 2000.
Locally, the Faith-based African-American Initiatives to Reduce
HIV/AIDS (FAITH) coalition is sponsoring the prayer week, along
with other organizations. FAITH is a collaboration including the
health department, denominations, community-based organizations
and individuals, including the Revs. Dan Taylor, pastor of Lennon
Seney United Methodist Church, and Joe Canada, pastor of St. Paul's
Baptist Church; Helen Ross McNabb Center, Positively Living, TennCorp.,
and People Empowering People's Project. Through a partnership with
the Knox County Health Department and the FAITH coalition, members
of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. were instrumental in organizing
the week's events, particularly the HIV/AIDS educational program
and festival. The event on Saturday, March 9, will be hosted by
the organization and is part of its International Day of Service.
