Churches mark AIDS awareness week

GALVESTON - Congregations in Galveston County conducted special
services Sunday to mark the start of national Black Church Week
of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS.
The nationwide effort to mobilize African-American churches begin
after the Congressional Black Caucus call for the Department of
Heath and Human Services to declare a state of public health emergency
due to the spread of AIDS among African Americans.
"The statistics are shocking," said Michael Jackson,
executive director of St. Vincent's Episcopal House and a coordinator
of some services and events.
While African Americans make up 13 percent of the U.S. population,
they accounted for 57 percent of the new infections of HIV of new
infections of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
AIDS is the No. 1 cause of death for African-American men an women
aged 25 to 44.
Area churches have planned events to call attention to the epidemic
that is preying heavily on minority communities.
St. Vincent's House, 2817 Postoffice St., is sponsoring a program
on AIDS at 6 p.m. today. Representatives of the Galveston County
Health District and the AIDS Coalition of Coastal Texas will provide
information about testing and services.
A citywide AIDS Awareness Week of Prayer is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday
at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 909 40th St. The Rev.
Herman Lewis is pastor.
Among those participating will be the Rev. C. Wheat, the Rev, Kerry
Tillmon, the Rev. A.S. Johnson, the Rev. David Everson, the Rev.
A.W. Colbert and the Rev. M.C. Herdon.
