The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Tanzania Mainland is still a generalized epidemic while it is a concentrated type in Zanzibar (0.6%). The 2007-2008 Tanzania HIV Indicator Survey suggests the national HIV prevalence among those aged 15-49 year in Mainland is 5.7% (6.8% for women and 4.7% for men). By the end of 2008 it was estimated that 1.3 million people including adults and children were living with HIV. Women are more affected than men and although reliable data on the magnitude of the epidemic in the most-at-risk population in scarce, some studies are showing that the point prevalence is larger than 12% Zanzibar.
