According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
1.1 million people are living with HIV in the United States and 56,300 people become infected every year.
Every 9 and a half minutes, someone becomes infected with HIV in the United States. It is estimated that 21% of those infected don’t know their status.
The populations at greatest need concerning HIV infection include:
Gay & Bisexual Men, who represent 2% of the US population, but 53% of new infections.Young Black and Latino gay & bisexual men (13-29) are disproportionately affected;
Black Americans, who represent 13% of the population but 46% of new infections;
Latino Americans, who represent 15% of the population but 17% of new infections; and
Substance Users, an estimated 1 million injection drug users, account for 16% of new infections.
Black Americans and HIV/AIDS Infection
Approximately one in 16 black men will be diagnosed with HIV infection at some point in their life.
Approximately one in 30 black women will be diagnosed with HIV infection some point in their life.
At the end of 2007, blacks accounted for almost half (46%) of people living with a diagnosis of HIV infection in the 37 states and 5 US dependent areas.
