MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MTWARA!
Through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), The Balm-Tanzania supports HIV prevention and mitigation efforts in the country, which include among other things, building the capacity of faith communities in Tanzania to develop and implement HIV prevention and impact mitigation programs. The Balm-Tanzania strategy of Our Churches and Mosques Lights the Way (OCMLW) initiative is implemented through local faith communities in Mtwara (the Catholic Diocese of Mtwara, the Christian Council of Tanzania (CCT)-Mtwara region and the National Muslim Council (BAKWATA)- Mtwara region. One of the specific programmatic goals under this initiative is to raise awareness of the unique strength of Mtwara faith-based organizations and faith communities in facilitating the fight against HIV/ AIDS, and support them in this area. To this end, The Balm-Tanzania provides technical assistance and resources (financial and material including supplies) aimed at capacity development with a view to empower these faith communities to deliver effective HIV/ HTC services. Specific activities carried out under this partnership include: Supporting and providing faith-based voluntary counseling and testing with more emphasis on outreach strategy work.
